Double Workshop Day

Workshops are back! It’s been a while since I’ve offered either of these, and it’s important to me to teach them together. I’ll be teaching the foundational Intro to Trauma-Informed Tattooing workshop in the morning and Beyond Trauma-Informed Tattooing in the afternoon, with a short lunch break in between. If you are new to these, I highly recommend both. The suggested cost for the full day is $85, or $60 for the Intro class and $25 for the Beyond class, but all are pay what you wish. If you can pay the high end (or higher!) please do- it helps me continue to offer these and do the ongoing research in between that keeps the material current and valuable. A portion of class proceeds will be donated to We the People, an abolitionist collective and mutual aid organization in Bed-Stuy.

Sunday, August 27th

11:00 am-1:00 pm EST ~ Intro to Trauma-Informed Tattooing

This two-hour workshop will be a virtual introduction to the concept of trauma-informed tattooing. We will discuss trauma and PTSD through an anti-oppression lens, how they exist within the practice of tattooing, and practices to facilitate a safer and more empowering experience for clients. Narrated by tattoo artist Tamara Santibañez, this presentation covers communication methods, building trust with clients, and considering needs beyond basic client care.

The workshop includes live captioning. For any additional access needs, please email santibaneztattoo@gmail.com.

Please note: the workshop will be recorded.

Workshop payment can be made via Venmo to @tamara-santibanez, CashApp to $TamaraSantibanez, or PayPal to santibaneztattoo@gmail.com.

2:00-3:30 Pm EST ~ Beyond Trauma-Informed Tattooing

This discussion-based workshop will raise observations and criticisms of trauma-informed care’s trajectory within the tattoo industry, focusing on the ways language is co-opted by capitalism.  We will place trauma-informed practices into relationship with radical frameworks and consider how to center our practices in our values, as well as how to be more discerning when encountering “safe space” labeling.  I envision this space as one to bring challenges you’ve run into and to workshop alternatives, dreaming a more liberatory practice into the future.

 The workshop includes live captioning.  For any additional access needs, please email santibaneztattoo@gmail.com.

 Please note: the workshop will not be recorded in order to provide attendees with a sense of confidentiality and to enable sharing among our group.

Workshop payment can be made via Venmo to @tamara-santibanez, CashApp to $TamaraSantibanez, or PayPal to santibaneztattoo@gmail.com.

Compassion Fatigue and Burnout Prevention for Tattoo Artists

Friday, May 14th from 5-7pm EST

This Zoom workshop will discuss in-depth the ways that tattooing as a service and profession can impact the emotional and mental well-being of its practitioners. We will cover burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma, their effects, and recovery and support strategies artists can employ towards career longevity. We’ll investigate embodied approaches to knowing our boundaries and how to better enforce them in our work lives, as well as understanding how our identities and industry positionality can make us more vulnerable to burnout. Participants will be able to access presentation slides and recording following the live workshop.

Could This Be Magic? Virtual release event

STORY.jpg

“Tattooing can be transformative—a way to create a new version of yourself.  A tattoo can be a coping strategy, a manifesto, a bold declaration.  Tattoos are armor.  Being able to access these types of expression can make us feel more free as individuals, and affirms the values that bring us into ourselves. We both mark and witness these moments for individuals, conjuring temporary autonomous zones and movement towards collective liberation.”

Virtual Book Release for Could This Be Magic? Tattooing as Liberation Work by Tamara Santibañez

~~~~ in conversation with publisher Zac Scheinbaum of Afterlife Press ~~~~~ Q&A to follow ~~~~~~~ via Zoom
Register here.
Using the concept of trauma-informed care as a foundation, Santibañez expands on the vast political potential of tattooing, illuminating the unseen work tattoo artists perform without exception.  Underpinning the infinite magic of tattooing is the emotional work that artists often come to fear and avoid.  Santibañez argues that tattooing has enormous potential to both empower and disempower its recipients, and that we cannot fully realize its positive potential without first acknowledging the scope of what it accomplishes and supporting ourselves in our abilities and limitations.
Part manifesto, part love letter, part workbook, Could This Be Magic? features toolkit prompts and exercises, practical guidelines around good consent and boundary practices, and ideas for shaping a more ethical industry into the future. This work offers something to all artists from self-taught DIY tattooers to ritual practitioners, apprentices and longtime street shop veterans, from those newly engaging with activism to those who place politics at the forefront of their work.  Sourcing quotes from artists from all walks of the industry, Could This Be Magic? is a profound exploration of the radical possibilities of justice-centered tattooing.
Available via Afterlife Press.
